"... to friends, family and millions of people praying around the world this Palm Sunday weekend don't be afraid. Terri Schiavo will not be forsaken."
- Tom Delay
Sean @ Preposterous Universe writes:
"Terri Schiavo, the person, is gone. Her cerebral cortex has been destroyed. There is no possible way for her to be restored. It's really an appreciation of this fact about how reality works, rather than an abstract respect for the rule of law, that separates the different sides of this issue. Those who think that Terri Schiavo's feeding tube should be removed, in accordance with her own wishes and those of her legal guardian, understand the blunt fact about her state, namely that she is for all important purposes dead. Those who think there is a moral imperative to keep the tube in are under the misimpression that there is still a functioning person there, and that letting her die would be murder."
my comments:
The problem- and we will also be similarly challenged on many issues from healthcare to protection of the environment- is that the radicals who are advocating for Terri believe in MIRACLES.
People who believe in MIRACLES cannot be persuaded by reason. Her cerebral cortex has liquified? So what? With prayer and faith and Jesus- anything is possible.
There is no rational discourse with the radical religious right.
We have to understand that.
What is truly appalling- and dangerous to America- is that seemingly rational people are willing to appease this contingent of believers- for political gain.
(By the way- overpopulation and depletion of the world's resources are also nothing to worry about- God will take care of us- if we believe.)
That this is all occurring during Easter will not be lost on the true believers.
Future historians will see this week as a turning point in American politics- whether for good or ill is still to be determined.
